This Weeks Top 10

After a week of tests, a weekend of college football, a huge Seahawks win and a good visit from my mother, its time for another Top 10.

1. USC
This is why they're the best. Losers make excuses and champions find ways to win. Reggie Bush is the best, most exciting player in college football. Vote Bush for Heisman. I'll take SC, Cal, AZ St., UCLA, Oregon and Oregon St. against the top six teams in any other conference in the country. Go Pac-10, long live the Pac-10.

2. Seattle Seahawks
Sure, we knew they were going to beat the Texans, but it doesn't make a 42-10 pasting any less sweet. Next watch as they continue dominating the state of Texas and beat down the Cowgirls.

3. Curtis Brown
He didn't get the OGB in my previous post but he easily fills the #3 slot in this week's Top 10. 31 carries for 147 yards and 2 TDs? Game breaking run on 4th down? MWC player of the year? Remember, you heard it here first.

4. My Momma
In town for her sister's bday, my mother went to the BYU football game with us Saturday night. I think my friends liked talking to her more than me. Is that a bad thing?

5. Rob Jones
Call this my ex-roommate of the week slot. After reading through the entire blog and finding he wasn't included he turned to me in disgust and said, "this blog sucks." Thanks Robbie.

6. Kanye West
'Now I ain't sayin she a gold digger, but she ain't messin with no hist'ry major.' Thanks to Kanye for finally explaining to me why some girls don't give me the time of day. And that when I do get married, I should ask for a pre-nup. Dang it, I should have been pre-dental.

7. NFL Primetime
Quite possibly the best show on television and definitely better than going to yet another Belmont dessert party where dudes outnumber the girls at least 3 to 1. I'm told there are more girls at BYU than guys. Where are you? Watching NFL Primetime?

8. BYU v. Notre Dame
The football gods heard my prayers and gave us tickets to the game this Saturday. I will make my first pilgrimmage to the Mecca of college football, and, if my sacrifice is satisfactory, maybe BYU will win the game.

9. My Friends
Please excuse the sentimentality... Call this a general shout out to my peeps who make this list just because of who they are. Megan, thanks for smiling. Mandee, congrats on being a "statistician." Marc and Kenty, for being great roommates. MJ for being my best old friend. Justin for making me think. Matty for being the best brother ever. Caroline, happy bday. Friends are what makes life good.

10. The Smokehouse
I ate yet another pulled pork sandwich at the smokehouse Friday night and it was as delicious as the first. We got there just before close and the crew there at TS treated us great.

Yes, Im so excited you are gonna get to see TD Jesus up close and personal. You're gonna love it! Just remember to show up early (and dont look at the spread)! Are you going with friends or family?

Oh, and (sorry for the double-post) I can't believe you have any trouble meeting GIRLS AT BYU? Look, TiVo Primetime (as I do every week) and get out there. I'm sure those little co-ed cutties are lining up to meet you. Im not saying lead with the whole 'history-major' thing, but you are MR. INTERESTING...Without getting to "colorful" I just want to point out that you should really be hanging out with that BYU cheer squad Jake, Geez Louise, from what I've seen those gals are pretty easy on the eyes! Come on bro, lets see a lady's name on the top ten list soon...That hawks game was a blast, you gotta come to a game soon! (da-na-na,da-na-na)

Where to begin. Because it is still so fresh in my mind coming off the wonderful weekend of college football I have to say that I piss on Notre Dame and their "tradition." (Apologies in advance to Jake's little sister Kristen and please don't delete this post. PS Kristen, if you are still available when you turn 24 look me up. Maybe we could go to a movie or something ;))I want nothing to do with a "tradition" that feels the need to resort to cheap gimmicks like letting the grass on the field grow for two to three weeks without grooming. That is so bush league in my opinion. Do you not have enough faith in your program? Is your scheme that poor? It is almost as bad as Iowa and their pink locker rooms. And another thing, I am tired of the one victory and now we are ranked because we are Notre Dame. PS you haven't "returned to glory" yet. It is half way through one season. You lost to a crappy Michigan State team. At home none the less. If I hear that "the echoes have woken" one more time I might have to haul my lazy butt all the way to Indiana and give Mr. Charlie Weis the filthy bishop myself. Enough of the hyperbole already. The cupboard is full. ND has veterans on offense with a veteran QB. The experience shows. Thank you very much Mr. Willingham. Oh yeah let's not forget the bye week and the fact that SC had to travel half way across the country. ND played well I will give them that yet the better team won. I guess there IS justice in this world after all. Enough of that rant. Maybe I should start my own blog. I hear everybody is doing it these days. My next topic I would like to discuss is the pretense of Jake staying home watching tv instead of being social. I don't believe it one bit. Have you seen his facebook lately? I spent one weekend with the guy and it took me a full week to recover. I couldn't keep up with the social butterfly known as Jake. If not for the energy I was able to garner from giving Matt the creepy grandpa in Tiger Woods golf I would never have made it through church without falling asleep. I would just like to close by dedicating this post to Chester Voltaire. If I liked guys I would consider spending time with him. That is until I was able to find something small that bothered me so that I could walk away and still feel good about myself without needing to address my own issues. PS I will please see my forthcoming post RE: the war in Iraq.

it occurred to me after posting and re-reading #6 in this week's Top 10 that it may be my wife who asks for the pre-nup...

Good to see that you're an active poster, Morgan. Too bad you're not coming to South Bend with us, we'd have a riot, or at least cause one when BYU wins. I, for one, would like to know what the filthy bishop is.

jack, Thank you for giving the Pacific Ten its proper due. Don't you wish 'your cougs' could play in a real league like that? And yes, Mr. Bush put the Heisman on Lock-down Saturday. Instant classic, fo show. But hold the phone my BYU-symph friends, SC may have stolen one this weekend. That spot was horrible, they put WAY too much time back on the clock...and, worst of all, Bush cheated when he pushed his Heisman buddy in for the TD. Is that what you meant by "champions find ways to win?"... Yes, champions always blah, blah, blah. Look, Notre Dame is great this year and that's the truth.com. And Mr. Charlie Weis is a fantastic coach, no Ty Wills, but the best for the Irish. Morgan, great post, the best team did win, but please go easy on the "Catholic" boys in green (those jerseys are almost as cool as the San Diego powder-blues). In some past early-season polls you could knock the Irish for their tradition-influenced ranking, but beware my friend, this year that argument sounds pretty stock. Also, field conditions are all about match-ups, thats not Busch league, that's pro-level field management. BYU best not worry about how well Jose-the-grass-mower-operator performs, but rather that kid from Dublin that brings magic like Montana. AND I think it is fair to say they have a bit of football tradition in South Bend, did you see the pre-game pep rally--It was like watching the ESPY's, that's well-worth a couple points. Let's hope ND doesn't make your game a statement game, they are going to be fired up...Anyway, great posts, and I look forward to hearing more from Matty. And Kristen isn't THAT young anymore. I'm not saying every post should include a dirty bishop, but I'm sure she has a strong head on her shoulders these days. I also look forward to hearing her opinions. I really just hope that I don't offend your chief political consultant, or his wife (tell them hello if they don't read this)...

MJ- Just a quick clarification. I don't think that BYU will beat Notre Dame this weekend. There is no way that we will be able to slow down Samardzija (sp) nor Stovall. They are too big and strong. I like Justin Robinson but even I am bigger and arguably stronger than him. I also think that B. Quinn has matured significantly from last year. He won't be nearly as confused by the 3-3-5. ND is just bigger, stronger, and faster than BYU. Similar to how USC is bigger, stronger, and faster than ND. All this aside, I stand by my claim that the hype wagon needs to slow down. ND is about as much America's team as the Cowboys are nowadays. Times change my friends. We are rolling with the Jetsons now. Time to leave the Flintstones behind.

Was lead here by MJ. Perhaps I'll blog roll you. Anyways, my favorite top 10 is Kanye's slot. History Major. Excellent way of putting it. Another one of my favorite Kanye quotes:

"I don't know what's better, gettin' paid or gettin' laid. All I know is when I'm gettin' one the other's gettin' away."

At least Morgan had the gumption to give credit where credit is due with B. Quinn. Also I have to agree with Jake. Where are all the ladies att? I also attended the party and we were definetly outnumbered at least 3:1. But let me tell you that 1 was a pretty special one.

Interesting blog, Bro. Lybbert. I must say I find your top 10 "interesting." #1 - without Bush, ND wins by 28 pts. And Bush's push on Lionheart should have been a 5 yd penalty (note: offensive penalties do not stop the clock) = ND wins.

Based on the quality of the comments posted, I can also venture to guess why many of your friends are not married, and it's not because of their majors.

As for BYU at ND, I'm sad to say that ND will win by at least 28, though BYU's chances are much improved with Soul-berg on the sidelines. All wheels, no skills.

USC won? Not really.
Rule 9, Section 3, Article 2B - Interfering for or helping the runner or passer.

"The runner shall not grasp a teammate; and no other players of his team shall grasp, push, lift or charge into him to assist him in forward progress."

"Penalty - 5 yards from the basic spot."

By the way, the clock runs on an offensive penalty.

matt said...

Ouch, anonymous poster! That really hurt! Here I was thinking all along that my lack of "forward progress" in the marriage arena was because of my choice of major! Thanks to you, all of us unmarried guys in majors with no potential can rest easy and realize that the absence of a ring on our finger is entirely unrelated to major and somehow totally related to our opinions on college football, hip-hop music, and the war in Iraq. Please continue with the oh-so-enlightening posts, hidden behind the mask of anonymity--they are so helpful...

Wow.. you can not be serious about your top ten, granted thanks for the shout out, but i am about to break you down one by one.. starting with the top of the list and your outragous comment that the PAC 10 is a domminating conferance.. i will give you SC and even ASU, but as for the rest of them, they are piss poor, i am an SEC fan, and have more hate for the west coast and the gay pac ten, but all bais asside, this can not be a serious statement you have.. the Big 10 and Big 12 and the ACC all have better teams then the gay PAC 10... in fact skratch that, lowercase the pac ten they are so bad. i can go on all night about this one, i leave you a website to go to about how stong the SEC is and how formor west coast coach CRIES after loosing in the real Death Valley, despite being plus five in the turnover catagory... http://sports.tbo.com/sports/MGB68JGRUEE.html go there to back this up.. and PS.. LSU still can go to the Nat'l title game, GEAUX TIGERS!! number 2, i hate the seagulls... they will choke again soon... number 3, i say Curtis Brown for heisman T shirts are on the press... number 4, should be number one, she was the bright spot this weekend over the LSU win...number 5, Robbie is gay and i think he is dating up.. good man, but lets give him three cheers for dating up... number 6, kayne is the most lyrical artist out there, and i cant help but say that i am going to be the one signing the prenup, if i am lucky, i want to live off daddy's money!!.... number 7, it aint got nothing on College Game day... amen. number 8, Prepare the Sacrifce cause this is going to be bloody!! i have love for the Cougs, but it is not going to be a repeat... number 9, thank you for the shout, but i can still punch you from my room... and will... number 10, you should thank me for introducing you to this marvelous eatery, just as i thank you for the introduction to.. that itailian place... and i live to serve

Matt,
I think Captain Anonymous was referring to the foul language and qouting Kanye West, who probably isn't on any of the General Authorities iPod playlists.

That was a nice overreaction to the anonymous post, though.

Point taken. A few less exclamation points would have been beneficial.

Mr. Anonymous, your logic is infallible. Without Samardzija (sp) ND would have lost by at least 28. With regards to the no-call by the officials with respect to the push by the President, making that call at that point in the game would have been a travesty because it would have shifted the focus of the game from the players to the officials. We all saw how great that was during the ALCS. Also, when was the last time anybody at any level made that call? When I say anybody I mean anybody except officials from the Mountain West Conference. Who knows what kind of last minute game altering calls they have made especially based on their recent track record. But that is another rant for another day. Also, credit goes to Pete Carroll for making the decision to not use instant replay this summer. He must be clairvoyant (tic). One last question for you Mr. Anonymous, do you like apples?

Anonymous said...

"Mr. Anonymous" here, as you like to call me. Thanks for the feedback guys. Us students are entitled to our own opinions, and I wish BYU the best, but I still think ND wins big.

In regards to morgan's comments, I see where you're going with this and I think your line of reasoning is a bit skewed. On the no-call - are you saying that at the end of the game anything goes because the refs shouldn't decide the outcome? So if an ND player grabs Leinhart by the facemask and throws him to the ground before he gets into the endzone, it should go uncalled so it's not "a travesty because it would have shifted the focus of the game from the players to the officials?"

I do like apples. My favorites are Cameos and Galas. I also like apple pie, apple streudel, apple crisp, applesauce, apple juice, pineapple, the Big Apple, Johnny Appleseed, and others. Don't get me started on crab apples, though. They cause indigestion.

Thanks for the support, Glen!

Why was it automatically assumed that "Anonymous" was a he? The title "Mrs. Anonymous" could have just as easily been appropriate.

Anonymous said...

Androgenous Anonymous who may or may not be a Prada model- You make an excellent point the aforementioned "Mr. Anonymous" very well could be a "Mrs. Anonymous." My future diatribes will be asexual in nature.

Anonymous said...

Captain Anonymous- We could go on all day about officiating and never come to an agreement. That is what makes sports beautiful. Everyone has their bias and will support their team to the end. Logic is thrown out the window. I would just like to leave everyone with the opinion of a widely respected journalist by the name of Jason Whitlock. In a recent article posted on the ESPN website he Whitlock wrote "Nine flags and 98 yards in USC penalties is the dirty little secret that kept "the greatest game ever played" close." And with that I bid you all good day. Or in the immortal words of Eric Cartman "Screw you guys, I'm going home."

Anonymous said...

You would think a writer for ESPN would know that the refs for the game were from the Pac-10, which leads me to believe they weren't trying to keep ND in the game.
