Barack Obama & The (Rev.) Wright-Wing Nut

Image link

If it's alright for the liberal press to call into question Mitt Romney's judgment for being a member of a church that denied the priesthood to blacks over 30 years ago, then Barack Obama's ongoing, 20-year, close personal relationship with his America-hating pastor is fair game.

Among other things, Reverend Wright preached that:
- The US is like al-Qaeda
- HIV is a genocidal plot by the American government to eliminate African Americans
- Drugs are/were promoted by the government as a way to imprison blacks
- America deserved 9/11
- FDR and the US government knew the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor
- Honored virulent anti-semite, Louis Farrakhan and traveled with him to visit Libyan tyrant/terrorist Muammar al-Gaddafi
- Uses anti-semitic language**

The list goes on. And it's all sick. The last thing Obama needs now is for someone to find a clip of Rev. Wright ranting with a cut to Barack and family in the audience, cheering and nodding their heads. Believe it or not, we honestly hope Barack never found himself nodding as this crazed loon spouted off about some crazy 9/11 truther-inspired conspiracy.

Could you imagine if this were John McCain or even Hillary Clinton and their white religious leader were doing the same thing? We strongly defend Wright's right to say these things (and, after all, this isn't Canada), but he and those who associate with him will suffer the consequences in the court of public opinion. And in Pennsylvania next month.

It looks like Christmas came early for the Clinton camp this year.

We don't think Barack Obama hates America or believes what Reverend Wright preaches, but maybe his attitudes are closer to the attitude of his wife who infamously stated that Barack's candidacy for President was the first time she has been proud of her country.

If he doesn't agree with these things, why did Obama associate himself with Rev. Wright for 20 years?

**UPDATE 17 March 12:59pm MST: A sample of Rev. Wright's anti-semitic language:
In sermons and interviews, Dr. Wright has equated Zionism with racism and Israel with South Africa under its previous policy of apartheid. On the Sunday after 9/11, Wright said the attacks were a consequence of violent American policies. Four years later, Wright suggested that the attacks were retribution for America’s racism.

“In the 21st century, white America got a wake-up call after 9/11/01,” Wright wrote in a church-affiliated magazine. “White America and the western world came to realize that people of color had not gone away, faded into the woodwork or just ‘disappeared’ as the Great White West kept on its merry way of ignoring black concerns.”

In one of his sermons, Wright said, “Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!…We [in the U.S.] believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God.”

As for Israel, “The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now,” Wright has said. “Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.”

Leave him alone. As he stated on H & C tonight, he only heard a couple of Wright's anti-America tirades before yesterday, and as everybody knows, one must be aware of at least three damning and exploitable character references before his associations become scutinizable. Whew! Off the hook again. I bet Olberman & Co. are relieved.

(I don't believe Mitt was being judged for being a member of a church denying blacks priesthood. He was being judged by Southern Christians and the like who don't believe in modern day prophets. However, no one in my liberal circle has ever mentioned either when discussing Mitt. If anything, the "liberal media" you so frequently note did a fantastic job of judging Mitt on his merits and not his clergy. That said...I digress?)

Well...The Rev ran his mouth and said some truly horrendous things. But if you think this is the worst "they" have against Barack (thank you for reminding us his middle name is Hussein) Obama, you got another thing coming. They tried to get him with the Farrakhan connection, and Im sure McCain is just waiting to Swiftboat him with the crack stories. He will be called a womanizer, a scoundrel, and hustler. I wonder if this blog will treat stories of McCain's dark side with the care of these stories about Barack.

The controversial Pastor is nothing more than a black Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell (sp?) caught saying some things he most likely wouldn't say on television or radio. Come on Jakey, lighten up, gays didn't cause 9/11 and no one deserves anything similar to 9/11. FDR most likely did know about Pearl Harbor and Osama (not Obama, for those simple-minded, ignorant folks who think the two are similar) that is Osama, did everthing he could to TELL THE PRESIDENT that 9/11 would happen. Also, could you please cite the frequently used anti-semitic language, or remove that from your list.

Is this the blog that will question what members of a church say? On what members of a church believe God has told them? Who are we to question such things?

FYI: CERTAIN DRUGS WERE CREATED AND PROMOTED BY THE VICE PRESIDENT YOU VOTED FOR TWICE

Wow. There are so many holes in that argument I don't know where to begin.

Since McCain is not our poster-child of conservatism, and most conservatives voted for Thompson and Romney, we feel betrayed by the Republican party for pardoning McCain's liberal ways. Any argument you use against McCain is moot and comes across as a diversion. Please stick with the topic at hand.

I love your sentiment that since Wright's comments aren't true, they aren't that big a deal. Nice. This shows your true misunderstanding of the essence of free speech.

Speaking of free speech, nobody ever said religious leaders don't have that right. Nonetheless, watch out how you wield that sword because it is pretty sharp. Farbeit from me to tell people what they can and can't say. That said, how can you afford one person the right to say whatever he wants, but condemn the person who opposes those radical comments? Who's the "hate-monger" now?

ps Thanks Jake for reminding us that Hillary's former surname is Rodham

Really? Thats the best you got?

I dont see a link between those three quotes and anti-semitism. I only see you disagreeing with his view of the conflict.

Mitchy,

1. Actually, your argument is full of holes. I wasnt making an argument, rather a comment on Jake's argument, which for the most part I agree with.

2. I didn't bring up McCain, the article openly asked the question: "Could you imagine if this were John McCain or even Hillary Clinton and their white religious leader were doing the same thing?" I am pointing out that McCain, who hired Mr. Rove (who Im sure is conservative enough for you) will be bringing far worse against Obama.

3. YOUR ARGUMENT did not address any of my major points.

4. How did I misunderstand free speech? Im interested to hear this one.

5. Where did I say Wrights comments were "not a big deal?" I only alluded that his statements are no different than those heard at a Promise Keepers meeting or a Southern GOP rally. That said, Jakes point that this man performed a baptism for the Obamas links him to the Reverend is valid and concerning. Yet, please remember, Rev. Wright comes from a different time, as do many elderly members of American churches, many elderly pastors, and many elderly church leaders.

6. How did my comment condemn you and your beliefs in any way? I thought I was being the tolerant one.
