Stealing The Election For Franken

Up in Minnesota, Democrats are doing what Democrats do--whatever it takes to win. By hook or crook. From the WSJ:

For example, there was Friday night's announcement by Minneapolis's director of elections that she'd forgotten to count 32 absentee ballots in her car. The Coleman campaign scrambled to get a county judge to halt the counting of these absentees, since it was impossible to prove their integrity 72 hours after the polls closed. The judge refused on grounds that she lacked jurisdiction.

Up in Two Harbors, another liberal outpost, Mr. Franken picked up an additional 246 votes. In Partridge Township, he racked up another 100. Election officials in both places claim they initially miscommunicated the numbers. Odd, because in the Two Harbors precinct, none of the other contests recorded any changes in their vote totals.

According to conservative statistician John Lott, Mr. Franken's gains so far are 2.5 times the corrections made for Barack Obama in the state, and nearly three times the gains for Democrats across Minnesota Congressional races. Mr. Lott notes that Mr. Franken's "new" votes equal more than all the changes for all the precincts in the entire state for the Presidential, Congressional and statehouse races combined (482 votes).

Reagan help us if Democrats somehow steal the election in Minnesota, pull off a win in Georgia, and beat the felon in Alaska. It's not quite 60--the number necessary to forestall a filibuster--but it makes it that much easier to pressure 1-2 Republican Senators into following the Democrat crowd.

Alaskans Hate Democrats

Wow. Alaskans would rather elect a felon than a Democrat.

Personally, I'd trade Ted Stevens for one of the other losing Republican Senators. I hope he was just acting as a place-holder and will soon announce his retirement, so Alaska can have a new race and elect a good Republican.

Ted Stevens is part of the reason we lost in 2006 and this year--this image of Republican corruption and spendthriftery.

In Minnesota, it looks like Norm Coleman going to beat Al Franken. The AP is calling it for Coleman, but with this close of a margin, plan on a recount.

With 75% reporting, Gordon Smith is up on Jeff Merkley. In the past, I've expressed my disappointment in Smith's stance on the war. Last night, while chatting with my brother, I mentioned that it wouldn't hurt me too bad to see him lose. He quickly pointed out that Smith is better than any Democrat alternative. He's right. And, a Smith win makes the filibuster that much easier to maintain.

I'm sorry to report that Dino Rossi did not win in WA. Though he outperformed John McCain by 80,000 votes, in the end, it just was not enough to overcome all of the other things stacked against him and Republicans generally. He's a great candidate, and would have made a fantastic governor, but it's probably too much to ask that he run again in 2012.

He should have won the first time around.

My district rep, Doc Hastings, won again. And Dave Reichert, the lone Republican on the West side is up by 400 votes or so with 40% reporting from his district. Cross your fingers.

The so-called "death with dignity" initiative passed meaning WA joins OR as a place you can go to legally kill yourself. That's something to be proud of. I can see the visitors bureau slogan now, "Welcome to Washington, proudly offing the weak and enfeebled since 2008!"

In California, Proposition 8, the other Big Thing I supported this cycle, is up 52-48 and looks like it will pass. I cannot express to you how relieved and happy and grateful I am at this result.

Look on the bright side, folks. And Remember, we are Happy Warriors. We lost the big one, won a few little, but important ones, and we live to fight another day.

The Closer: Minnesota In Play?

They always said John McCain played well as an underdog. And it looks like this election is no different. From everything I can gather, trends are moving his direction. I guess the only question is whether or not there is enough time.

The latest news out of Minnesota, home of this year's RNC, suggests that state may be in play.

60 hours until votes are counted in Minnesota, Barack Obama’s advantage over John McCain is back inside the margin of sampling error, according to SurveyUSA’s final look at one of 2008’s most interesting states. Obama 49%, McCain 46%, in interviewing underwritten by KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, WDIO-TV Duluth and KAAL-TV Rochester, 10/30/08 through 11/01/08. Obama led by 6 two weeks ago, now by 3. The late break to the GOP is occurring among men and seniors.

Yup. We got an election on our hands.

I'm not prepared to add Minnesota to the list of 5, but if you're from Minnesota, by all means, GOTV. If you live close (Dakotas, etc.) and feel like you speak the language (northern continental American), you too should call Minnesotans. Even if we can't get the state to go for McCain, the least we can do is keep that idiot Franken out of the Senate.
