More Reasons For Optimism

From Jim Geraghty at Campaign Spot, his friend, the man they call "Obi-Wan." Let the Democrats and moderates get their poll-predicting information from complex statistical modeling and empirical evidence. As for me, I'll take the word of a Star Wars hero:

Look, the real drama to this election is being provided not by the candidates but the polling community. By which I mean the decision they made to stake out — as Campaign Spot has noted — a remarkably bold position, that the Democratic Party turnout is not only going to exceed a recent historic advantage of 4 percent but go to 6.5 percent (Rasmussen) to 8 percent in many polls to even 12 percent in one.

I keep looking for the justification for this. Not easy to find. Rather like the academics' one-time belief in the Aristotlean spheres and an earth-centered universe, it just seems to be a pretty good working theory — some sort of way to make sense of observable phenomena and keep all the smart people talking agreeably and pleasantly among themselves.

[...]

In the old days the networks had political directors like Marty Plissner and Hal Bruno who kept an eye on the tendency to politicize the number-crunchers. What happens when that sort of internal check is lost was evidenced by the spectacular embarrassment – the debacle — of the exit polls in 2004. (Obi ) The polite explanation was that the skewing resulted from the fact that Democratic voters are more likely to talk to polling representatives at the polls. What got buried was the fact studies found that the cultural-political backgrounds of the exit-poll employees was a big factor.

Anyway, back in the days when exit polls were reliable — if a first or second wave of numbers were seen similar to the McCain-Obama battleground polls that came out today the network insiders would have been saying: hold everything, this is a very close one. (That's because they usually wacked two or three points off the Democrats' total since urban areas get better represented in the exit polls.)

So, if the polling community is basically right in their turnout models, this is looking like '64 — a nightmare scenario for the GOP. But if they are off to any significant degree, the state polls seen today (even though some of them favor a high Dem turnout model) make this a very different race. And what about the outlier polls in Pennsylvania and even one in Minnesota showing a close race?

And there are other questions. What about the reaction to media bias (Obamamania, the resentment towards Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber) driving up Republican turnout? What about the extent to which Reagan Democrats in Florida are being urged to the polls by the McCain campaign?

And the reason that the polling community, not to mention the Obama campaign should be uneasy is that finding the justification for their heavy Democratic weighting isn't readily accessible. And that is the point – along with failing to themselves take note that in this period of unprecedented economic turmoil and therefore any predictions this year might be questionable or at least hugely complicated, the pollsters and media gurus never really put their own premises about voter turnout front and center and asked for questions, objections and evaluations.

They seem to have slipped into a world of easy assumptions. Always dangerous for those whose job is to quantify and track the stars and planets of an ever-changing, ever-moving political universe.

Ignore the exit polls, wait for the real voting tallies to come in.

For those of you who prefer "stats" to "Star Wars," this seems like as good of a time as any to re-link to Iowahawk's little ditty on the supposed scientificness of polls and stats behind them.

Let me put it this way: Things with a lot fewer variables and even lower probability happen all the time.

Do Something: Get Out The Vote - Email To Your Friends Edition, Re-Post

If, like me, you'd prefer not to see America elect the most liberal-left President in modern history, with Pelosi controlling the House, and Reid the Senate, thereby enabling them to make us Canada Jr., how about a little GOTV?

(no offense to my Canadian readers)

We're close and closing. And anyway, nobody knows what to expect with the polls this year. They were wildly inaccurate during the primaries and they've been all over the place the last few weeks. The word "volatile" comes to mind.

Whether you are in a Battleground state for McCain, California for Proposition 8, or Washington State for Dino Rossi, volunteer a little time and make some calls or pound the pavement and visit some Republicans & undecideds.

PUT JOHN McCAIN & SARAH PALIN IN THE WHITE HOUSE?

PASS PROPOSITION 8?

GET DINO ROSSI ELECTED?

MAINTAIN A FILIBUSTER IN THE SENATE?

YES WE CAN!!!!!1!!!

UPDATE 31 October 12:45pm BST:
A little research has revealed an interesting fact: During the primaries, Barack Obama performed, on average, 2.8 points worse than he polled in the 3 days leading up to the election.

Call this whatever you want, I call this hope we can believe in.

Also, be sure and check out the Iowahawk post I linked to earlier today. His explanation of the statistics behind polling should also provide a bit of optimistic comfort.

Finally, I don't know how I missed this before: For all those of you who, like me, can't get to a McCain camp calling center, for whatever reason, click here, to sign up to make calls online. Even if you can only do it for 15 mins--do it. Do it for 15 mins every day from now until the election.

For advice and more on how to successfully do this, check out Gabriel Malor's post at Ace.

UPDATE 1 November 2:08am BST: I've got GOTV information for my favorite states. I narrowed down from the Top 10 states in terms of visits to OL&L to the states that could impact things. They are:
- California w/Prop 8 and the fact that so many of you are from there and can call out.
- Pennsylvania. Yep, I was surprised too. There are quite a few of you PA readers. And you live in a hotly contested state.
- Virginia - We'll see if this traditionally red state is really going to go for Obama. In fact, this will be an early bellweather on election night. You readers get out and do your job: make calls for McCain.
- Washington - Do what you can for Dino Rossi and make calls into other states.
- I think there's a Georgia Victory Center listed in there somewhere too. Lots of Georgia readers. Thanks, guys.
Anyway, thanks to Fernando M. for hosting the spreadsheet with all the info. Click here to download and get to work.

Alternatively, you can always make calls from the safety of your own home by using your computer.

UPDATE 2 November 12:47am BST: In cased you missed it.... Zogby's 1 day polling puts McCain up by 1--48-47. It ain't over till it's over.

UPDATE 3 November 1:40am BST: TIPP has it Obama 46, McCain 44. And remember, Obama, Guitar Hero* performs 2.8% worse than he polls.

Yeah he does.

*Over-the-top performance, no real skill or experience.

538's What To Watch On Election Night

They write it from the perspective of Obama backers, but it's still applicable to McCain in the sense that these are the states to watch for him, too.
That leaves our five states in play. The victory conditions for Obama involving these five states proceed something as follows:

1. Win Pennsylvania and ANY ONE of Colorado, Virginia, Ohio, or Nevada*
2. Win Ohio and EITHER Colorado OR Virginia.
3. Win Colorado AND Virginia AND Nevada.

(* Nevada produces a 269-269 tie, which would probably be resolved for Obama in the House of Represenatives.)

Now, suppose you think that Colorado is already in the bag for Obama because of his large edge in early voting there. We can then simplify the victory conditions as follows:

1. Win Pennsylvania
2. Win Ohio
3. Win Virginia AND Nevada

That's basically what it comes down to, although I'm sure each campaign would claim that there are a larger number of states in play.
We'll probably know which way Virginia is going by about 7pm PST. If, indeed, this Republican stronghold switches sides and goes Obama, then it will probably be a short night for McCain.

And by short night I mean, we'll know there's not much of a shot and we'll probably be better served putting in a pair of earplugs to shut out the I-told-you-so's from the Obamaniacs and going to bed.

However, if McCain wins Virginia, and I still believe he will, then we might be up quite a while watching the returns.

Cross your fingers, say your prayers, and make your mother-lovin' calls for McCain.

You Gotta Question Their Assumptions

About turnout and voter registration and party ID, that is.

More encouraging words from ACE:
THE PATH TO VICTORY FOR McCAIN IS IN OUR HANDS

The media polls are heavily weighted towards Democrats in terms of Party ID. With that kind of heavy weighting, it would be impossible for McCain to show any lead even if he had a small led among independents. For example, Rasmussen currently assumes the following party id break down: Democrats 40%, Republicans 32.8%, and Independents 27.2%. He is assuming a whopping 7 percent advantage in party id for the Democrats. This is a big barrier to overcome in these polls. If we assume a 85% Democrat support for Obama and 85% Republican support for McCain and a 50/50 breakdown among independents (ignore undecided and third party candidates) this would translate to a poll finding of 52.5% for Obama and 47.5% for McCain which incidentally gives the same 5% spread as in the current Rasmussen poll.

Note that all of this is simply from the 7% party id advantage. If we reduce the party id spread to 3%, the numbers would change to 51% for Obama and 49% to McCain. Now if we assume that McCain picks off more Democrats than Obama does Republicans, 85% Democrats for Obama and 90% Republicans for McCain then the outcome will be 49.3% for Obama and 50.7% for McCain, a clear LEAD.

What this simple analysis shows is that there are two crucial things for McCain victory:

a) HIGH Republican turnout.

b) HIGH PUMA (Democrats against Obama) turnout.

I strongly believe that both are very achievable. It all comes down to TURNOUT, GOTV, and ENTHUSIASM. This is why Obama and his media acolytes are working overtime to demorialize and suppress the turnout among Republicans and PUMAs. We have to keep working hard, ignore their propaganda, and get out and vote.

One final thing. Rasmussen has been steadily increasing his Dem party id advantage over the last three months. I suspect the same with other pollsters working for major media news organizations. However, the Republican base and the PUMAs are as energized as the Dem base and may in fact be even more energized. In addition to this, if last minute deciders go overwhelmingly against Obama as happened during the Democratic primaries in the swing states, McCain should win by an even bigger margin. The media and their pollsters are in for a huge surprise.

From an ex-Democrat turned independent supporting McCain/Palin '08.

Come on folks, join me in making the calls for McPalin. Click the link and copy and paste it and mail it to all your McPalin-supportin' friends and family. Write up a note in Facebook and paste a link there encouraging your friends to do the same. Make it your status on Facebook or MySpace.

This is the word: We can still win this thing.

Iowahawk On Urns & Balls

Let the wise-guy break down the complicated statistics of election polling for you. I promise, it will leaving you feeling optimistic about next Tuesday and make you laugh, at the end.
Statisticians love balls and urns. A typical Stats 101 midterm, for example, usually includes a question along these lines:

"You take a simple random sample of 1000 balls from an urn containing 120,000,000 red and blue balls, and your sample shows 450 red balls and 550 blue balls. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of blue balls in the urn."

After choking back a giggle about "blue balls," you whip out your calculator and text your frat brother who has a copy of last semester's midterm.

Poll Primer

The boys at 538 did a fairly informative write-up of the 8 different national tracking polls following the Presidential race. This is where they shine.

Their electoral analysis and explanation of sometimes hard-to-understand statistics-speak is very good.

When they go off the reservation--away from their niche, as it were--they turn into just another Daily Kos diarist--albeit at a different web address.

And, I'm Back (UPDATED)

Though I still don't have internet in my flat, I will be able gain interweb access while at "uni" (Brit-slang for school or class) briefly each day. This will limit me to fewer & shorter posts until the BT bureaucracy deigns to grant us flat-based access.

Since I was last plugged in (I'm w/o BlackBerry access too), the national trackers have moved towards John McCain while the Battle Ground and state-by-state analysis looks solid for Obama. Lets hope previous trends--where trackers were the early indicator, followed by state polling--hold and things move back to the 1-2 point status quo difference.

In case there were any question, I'm part of the righ-wing blogosphere that thinks McCain/Palin should attack Obama on the Ayers/Wright/Fannie-gate front whenever and wherever possible. I thought he should do this before he was behind and believe it even more now. For whatever reason (hope, change, etc.) a majority of Americans have chosen, at the moment, to support Barack Obama, the single most liberal candidate for President since George McGovern, at least.

Most of his liberal programs and associations and worldviews are cloaked in the aforementioned airy rhetoric. Part of the reason we know so little is because the media has not done its job in vetting The One. The other half of the fault lies with McCain who, since the end of the convention, has not done an adequate job educating the public.

He can lose this campaign and blame the press all he wants and there will be a lot of truth there. But he will also have to look at himself: Given the opportunity to take the fight to Barack Obama over Bill Ayers and Fannie-gate, John McCain mostly took a pass.

Instead, he filled in with me-too economic populism that neither appealed to independents/moderates (because Obama does a better job of selling it) nor to his conservative base. Seemingly, John McCain has done his best to kill the enthusiasm Sarah Palin brought to his campaign.

I'm not going to write a post-mortem with over 3 weeks left to go, because I think--I know--this thing can still change. If/when Americans wake up and realize that voting for Obama represents a radical change, not only for the prosperous Bush years they claim to hate, but from the entirety of American history, I think they will come home to the safe, moderate choice--John McCain.

UPDATE 5:17pm BDT: Reader Morgan H. sent me this WSJ article about the Obama tax plan and writes, "I found the McGovern reference quite timely." From that article:
For the Obama Democrats, a tax cut is no longer letting you keep more of what you earn. In their lexicon, a tax cut includes tens of billions of dollars in government handouts that are disguised by the phrase "tax credit." Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand no fewer than seven such credits for individuals:

- A $500 tax credit ($1,000 a couple) to "make work pay" that phases out at income of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple.

- A $4,000 tax credit for college tuition.

- A 10% mortgage interest tax credit (on top of the existing mortgage interest deduction and other housing subsidies).

- A "savings" tax credit of 50% up to $1,000.

- An expansion of the earned-income tax credit that would allow single workers to receive as much as $555 a year, up from $175 now, and give these workers up to $1,110 if they are paying child support.

- A child care credit of 50% up to $6,000 of expenses a year.

- A "clean car" tax credit of up to $7,000 on the purchase of certain vehicles.

Here's the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be "refundable," which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer -- a federal check -- from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. Once upon a time we called this "welfare," or in George McGovern's 1972 campaign a "Demogrant." Mr. Obama's genius is to call it a tax cut.

The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.

The total annual expenditures on refundable "tax credits" would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as "tax credits," the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is.

[...]

There's another catch: Because Mr. Obama's tax credits are phased out as incomes rise, they impose a huge "marginal" tax rate increase on low-income workers. The marginal tax rate refers to the rate on the next dollar of income earned. As the nearby chart illustrates, the marginal rate for millions of low- and middle-income workers would spike as they earn more income.

Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned from working overtime or taking a new job. As public policy, this is contradictory. The tax credits are sold in the name of "making work pay," but in practice they can be a disincentive to working harder, especially if you're a lower-income couple getting raises of $1,000 or $2,000 a year. One mystery -- among many -- of the McCain campaign is why it has allowed Mr. Obama's 95% illusion to go unanswered.

Electoral Projection

I've introduced many of my friends on the right to 538. They may not have known about it previously because its primary author--Nate Silver--is a dKos guy. I happen to know of his writing and research from the stuff he does at Baseball Prospectus. 538's methodology is good and, in my pursuit of true information wherever I can find it, they seem to have the best thing going when it comes to poll analysis.

Enter Election Projection.

The primary guy behind this site is a conservative Christian--and not the Obamabots masquerading as "concerned conservative Christian[s]" you see astroturfing all of the conservative websites.

I haven't spent much time reviewing his methodology to see if its sound, so I won't say anything more than to recommend him to you for your review--as another source of electoral analysis.

Mostly Democratic Economists Mostly Favor Obama (UPDATED)

I'm not trying to spin this report, commissioned by Dilbert creator, Scott Adams. It is what it is.

Here's their polling sample:
48 percent -- Democrats

17 percent -- Republicans

27 percent -- Independents

3 percent -- Libertarian

5 percent -- Other or not registered

I'd been led to believe there were more libertarian economists.

I'm not entirely surprised about these ideological splits--econ is still heavily influenced by the huge amount of liberals in higher education, though perhaps less so than other departments because of econ's emphasis on empirical evidence--facts--something with which most leftists have a tenuous relationship.

Anyway, most of the economists polled favored Barack Obama. The breakdown on individual issues--where they think each candidate is better--is ... interesting.

(This is analysis, not spin)

I want to point out two things:

On international trade, McCain is favored 51% to 26%. This probably has something to do with the fact that McCain is a free-trader and has demonstrated that time and time again, even when it has hurt him. He has opposed the ethanol guys and told Michiganians that the old jobs weren't coming back.

In my opinion, the single greatest thing that could be done for the world--especially the world's poor--would be an immediate end to trade barriers, subsidies, etc.--in short, free trade everywhere.

Meanwhile, Obama wants to unilaterally re-negotiate Nafta--a free trade agreement that is arguably George H.W. Bush (his administration did the heavy lifting) and Bill Clinton's greatest co-accomplishment. This might have something to do with his low score, despite the huge ideological split which should result in an unbeatable advantage.

The other thing I want to point out is item #12: "Increase taxes on wealthy." This is classic, leftist, redistributive, class-warfare language and causes me to question the neutrality of this poll. A neutral poll would not phrase a question like this. It would be something without classist language like, "tax policy."

UPDATE 3:06pm MDT: Pendulum Politics contributor, RD, writes:

I agree with your conclusions about economists in today's post. I don't know for sure, but it looks like the survey methods were biased. For example, question 12 might have read, "who is more likely to increase taxes on the wealthy?" The answer to that is obvious, and may not reflect normative conclusions of those surveyed. I have a hard time believing that most economists think Obama will be good for the economy, though they are likely to have widely varying views about other issues.

In a follow-up, he added this caveat:

When I say most economists don't think Obama would be good for the economy, I am basing this on his rhetoric. Whether he sticks to his platform when in office has yet to be seen (and is, in my opinion, unlikely).

Intrade Shows A John McCain Win

The latest trading data at Intrade shows John McCain leading Barack Obama, 51-47.3. This is a huge turnaround for McCain who was trading as low as 30 back in July.

I regularly follow 538, a blog run by Barack Obama supporters who work day jobs at Baseball Prospectus. These guys use principles they've gleaned from statistical analysis of baseball to more accurately predict the election based on polls. According to my admittedly rudimentary understanding of statistic and regression and everything, their model seems pretty good.

My brother, Matt, persuades me that Intrade is a better indicator than any poll because it takes into account information from across a much wider spectrum, a fuller sample of information--including information from insiders--and is not subject to the many potential pitfalls of a poll or series of polls.

(h/t: B. Berns: Yes, we should have bought low.)

World To Obama: We Want You

GlobeScan just concluded another one of those polls that do nothing for the Democratic candidate. In fact, it's gotten to the point where I think they do these polls--the ones where they ask the world which candidate they want for POTUS--to hurt Obama's chances of winning the White House. The reason? Most Americans could not care less who the world thinks we should elect.

Of course, all of this should be taken with a huge grain of salt. A similarly idiotic poll of the world found that only 46% believed that al Qaeda was responsible for 9/11, while 15% (the 'truthers') blamed the U.S. government, 7% (anti-Semites) blamed Israel, and 7% blamed some other groups.

Those of you in the room for whom fickle world opinion of your next leader plays a large role in determining your vote, please raise your hand.

Everyone else, take a good look around. These are the people who sew Canadian flags on their backpacks when they travel abroad because they don't want people to think they're American.

That's patriotism, folks.

Palin, Shy Republicans, &c.

The post-convention, post-Sarah Palin rollout confirm what I predicted the day McCain named Palin as his Vice Presidential nominee: She is a game changer.

USA Today is showing a 10 point lead for McCain/Palin among likely voters.
Zogby has him up by 4.
And Gallup shows him up by 5.

Granted, the 538 guys' model suggests a convention bounce that eventually regresses back to the mean. But the game changer wasn't the convention, per se. It was a combination of naming Palin and Palin's speech. This has to be measured separately to the outreach effort that was McCain's speech on the last night of the convention. That speech, as I wrote previously, was not for the the people at the Xcel Center or the base, it was for the Independents who are concerned about Obama's experience and wonder how in the world he's going to pay for all of his proposed programs (high taxes). McCain's bio and his criticism of his own party appeals to those voters. The latest polls, in part, reflect that.

In my opinion, the most significant thing to come out of the Palin pick/Palin speech was the result it had among the conservative base. In 2004 Bush won with conservatives turning out in huge numbers and that's pretty much it. My biggest concern from the day McCain became the presumptive nominee was that those people would stay home.

Palin has solved that problem. In fact, she has solved it in an incredible way. According to 538 and Ace, Republican identification is at its highest levels since immediately following the Bush innauguration. In terms of party ID, Democrats have always led Republicans. That it is now 48-47 Dems vs. Reps is significant. Needless to say, the Republican base votes more reliably than the twenthysomething hipsters who derive their cool from the Obama campaign. I defy them to show up to vote in November. I don't think it will happen. By then, voting Obama, Guitar Hero.* will be passé.

- Watch this story to see if it has legs. Specifically, the high level of coordination between the Obama campaign and the angry leftwing nuts of his party. Palin was announced as the nominee and this group of crazies manufactured ridiculous lie after ridiculous lie about her.

Needless to say, their attacks didn't have the desired effect as they drove curious voters to watch Palin in record numbers when she spoke at the convention. The Obama campaign saw the backlash and put out the word to leave her alone. Now, reports Ace, the Kos Kids crazy reports are being deleted because, Ace thinks (and I think he's right) the Obama campaign realized their attacks were repulsive and counterproductive. If the Obama camp is giving marching orders to dKos, DU, and HuffPo, this is a problem--as in, an election rules problem.

- Last point: The debate that compares Dems #1 to Reps #2 is proving to be the coup I thought it would be. A given group will argue the merits of Mayor vs. Community Organizer & Governor vs. 19 Month Campaign For President and then, midway through, realize that they are talking about #1 vs. #2 and how bad this is for Democrats. It makes John McCain look like the wisened, experienced leader.

*Over-the-top performance, no real skill or experience.
