Farewell Fred

Yesterday, we were sad to learn that Fred Thompson had exited the race for the Republican nomination. Fred Thomson, we hardly knew thee.

Of course, part of the reason we hardly knew Fred Thompson was because he didn't do a very good job of selling himself to voters. That part, we wont miss.

Thompson held the promise of being the conservative Republican voters could rally around once they soured on the politics of Rudy Giuliani or John McCain. It was not to be.

We read almost daily that the current crop of candidates is a poor one. We heartily disagree. John McCain, the "maverick" (the MSM loves Republican "mavericks") Senator from Arizona brings strong principles (with which we sometimes disagree) and a strong track record of leadership on foreign policy and fiscal policy. He was a war hero.

Rudy Giuliani is America's mayor. When 9/11 shook us to the core, we took strength from his strength.

Fred Thompson was on TV. Ronald Reagan was also an actor. We loved his traditional conservatism.

Mike Huckabee is an incredible speaker and dynamic politician.

Mitt Romney, well, Mitt saved the Salt Lake Olympics, rejuvenated Bain & Co., and brought health care to the masses in Massachusetts, whatever.

The Republican field is a talented one. And, feeling generous today, so is the Democratic field. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, (not John Edwards) and Bill Richardson all strike us as more capable and talented candidates than John Kerry, Vietnam war veteran.

(true, that is not saying much).

Short List of Things George Bush Hates

Writing about the Rove-started fires in Southern California got us thinking about all the things George Bush hates--John Kerry, black people in New Orleans, you know, pretty much everything. And it's because there are so many things that we are making this a short list, because if we listed all of them, well, we'd be here all night.

Dick Cheney - you see, George Bush hates the Veep for different reasons than you do. He hates him because everyone gives Cheney credit for things Bush thought up--like torturing terrorists. And because strangely, the Angry Left hates Cheney more than Bush.

Children - HE VETOED S-CHIP!!!!1!!!11!!!!!ONE!!!!! What more do you need to know? He'd rather fund the war in Iraq than give children health care. Come on.

Black People in New Orleans - Why? Because Kanye said so, that's why. And we believe everything Kanye says. Because he's a legitimate source of political and social commentary. And really catchy hip hop songs.

John Kerry/John Edwards - because they have better hair, etc.

Osama Bin Laden - but not enough to catch him!

Will Ferrell - for the global warming special announcement spoof he did about President Bush.

This blog - for obvious reasons.

Matt Berry: "He's a really patriotic guy"

Raisin had a field day with our last post about football patriot and erstwhile OL&L contributor, Matt Berry. But we can take it. In that article, we wrote about John Kerry's infamous botched joke and the usual idiocy from Chuck Rangel and referred the reader to Berry who we argued was an example of the type of person who often volunteers to serve--educated, accomplished, yet desiring to defend his/her country.

Well, Berry has been home from basic for a few months and while preparing for officer candidate school, he has continued working on ConSource--another project we've written about before.

In our daily review of cougarfan.com, we came across a recent ABC News 4 piece about Berry and his military service. His candor is refreshing. None of the false, 'shoot 'em up' bravado the loony left uses to caricature soldiers and conservatives. Nope, Berry is as honest about his patriotic desires to serve his country as he is his fears of what might happen to him in Iraq or Afghanistan. Click here to watch the video.

Thanks for your service, Matt.
