My Kind Of Seahawks

From an article in today's Seattle PI, more reasons to like Matt Hasselbeck and now-retired Mack Strong:
Last year after Matt Hasselbeck and Mack Strong gave President Bush an honorary Seahawks jersey at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for Rep. Dave Reichert, they took all kinds of heat.

Hasselbeck received nasty texts and e-mails, with one man saying, "I hate you, I'll never wear your jersey, I'll never like the Seahawks again." The meanness surprised him. His coach's wife, Kathy Holmgren, a staunch Democrat, was also upset about the two players giving Bush a jersey.

I miss Mack Strong. My dad, brother, and I met him at Seahawks training camp in the Summer of 2005. He was friendly and took time to shake everyone's hand and sign everything that anyone had for him to sign. He's a real class act.

Of course, Elizabeth Hasselbeck is Matt's sister-in-law. Good family. With any luck, I'll be voting for Matt for Senate from the state of Washington someday soon.

Matt Hasselbeck On The Seahawks 0-2 Start

Per the Seattle PI's Gerry Spratt:
"I apologize to all the people who own me on their fantasy teams," he said. "They can put me on the bench for a little while. But I'm going to get it turned around."

Whitewashing History, New York Times-Style

Sometimes we ask ourselves, "why do we still read the New York Times?"

And then we remind ourselves, "oh yeah, it's so the hypocritical haters don't accuse us of getting all our info--persuasive or otherwise--from the (what do they call it again? oh yeah, the "natty review." so clever, so original.) "Natty Review." It's the same reason we peruse the Daily Kos & Huffington Post, watch the Daily Show & The Colbert Report (genuinely funny, sometimes) and skim the angry-left ranting of the Seattle PI message boards.

Nevermind that the aforementioned hypocritical haters never read any of our stuff.
(And by that we don't mean this blog.)

Anywho, we ask ourselves these questions about our continued reading of the NYT because of ridiculous things like this, courtesy of James Taranto and Best of the Web:

The Jerusalem Post reports on a happy event for the Palestinian Authority:
President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday sent his regards to the families of Samir Kuntar and the other four Lebanese prisoners scheduled to be transferred to Hizbullah.

Abbas praised the prisoner swap and congratulated the Kuntar family.
Kuntar was in an Israeli prison for an attack that took place on April 22, 1979. Two years ago we quoted a survivor, Smadar Haran Kaiser, who described the attack:
It had been a peaceful Sabbath day. My husband, Danny, and I had picnicked with our little girls, Einat, 4, and Yael, 2, on the beach not far from our home in Nahariya, a city on the northern coast of Israel, about six miles south of the Lebanese border.

Around midnight, we were asleep in our apartment when four terrorists, sent by Abu Abbas from Lebanon, landed in a rubber boat on the beach two blocks away. Gunfire and exploding grenades awakened us as the terrorists burst into our building. They had already killed a police officer.

As they charged up to the floor above ours, I opened the door to our apartment. In the moment before the hall light went off, they turned and saw me. As they moved on, our neighbor from the upper floor came running down the stairs. I grabbed her and pushed her inside our apartment and slammed the door.

Outside, we could hear the men storming about. Desperately, we sought to hide. Danny helped our neighbor climb into a crawl space above our bedroom; I went in behind her with Yael in my arms. Then Danny grabbed Einat and was dashing out the front door to take refuge in an underground shelter when the terrorists came crashing into our flat.

They held Danny and Einat while they searched for me and Yael, knowing there were more people in the apartment. I will never forget the joy and the hatred in their voices as they swaggered about hunting for us, firing their guns and throwing grenades. I knew that if Yael cried out, the terrorists would toss a grenade into the crawl space and we would be killed. So I kept my hand over her mouth, hoping she could breathe. As I lay there, I remembered my mother telling me how she had hidden from the Nazis during the Holocaust. "This is just like what happened to my mother," I thought.

As police began to arrive, the terrorists took Danny and Einat down to the beach. There, according to eyewitnesses, one of them shot Danny in front of Einat so that his death would be the last sight she would ever see. Then he smashed my little girl's skull in against a rock with his rifle butt. That terrorist was Samir Kuntar.

By the time we were rescued from the crawl space, hours later, Yael, too, was dead. In trying to save all our lives, I had smothered her.
If smashing a 4-year-old girl's skull with a rifle butt makes Kuntar a hero, you have to wonder what one would have to do for the Palestinians to consider him a coward. The New York Times, meanwhile, describes Kuntar's attack this way:
Perhaps Israel's most reviled prisoner, Samir Kuntar, will return to a hero's welcome when he crosses into Lebanon this week, 29 years after he left its shores in a rubber dinghy to kidnap Israelis from the coastal town of Nahariya.

That raid went horribly wrong, leaving five people dead, a community terrorized and a nation traumatized. Two Israeli children and their father were among those killed.
What does the Times think would have happened if the "raid" had gone right?

David Horsey: Obama Backers Have No Sense Of Humor

Image link

In response to Obamaniacs' outrage over The New Yorker's satirical cover, David Horsey, a fav cartoonist of ours from the Seattle PI, sketched this one with John & Cindy McCain.

General conservative pundit response? A few chuckles.

You see, this harks back to something we have discussed on the pages of this blog before. Since conservatives do not revere their Presidential nominees the way leftists do, we don't take it as a personal affront when they are lampooned--even ironically.

And we get that The New Yorker was irony--not part of the right-wing attack machine meant to derail the utopian-Presidential campaign of one Barack Obama. The New Yorker cover wasn't designed to make fun of Obama--it was designed a send-up of gun/religion clinging conservatives. Duh.

It's not that leftists aren't smart--we're sure they're roughly as intelligent as McCain supporters--it's that they are blinded by their love of Obama.

What's even funnier is the fact that many leftist commenters on the pages of the PI see the Horsey cartoon and say, "take that, Republicans!" As though The New Yorker cover and Horsey's cartoon were some sort of back-and-forth name calling game between Republicans and Democrats (as opposed to funny satire from two leftwing periodicals). They didn't get The New Yorker cover and they don't get that the McCain cover makes fun of their lack of humor.

Oh well, they can just go back to watching The Daily Show and laughing when prompted by the laugh track.

[laugh!]

Sir Edmund Hillary, RIP

Before knocking off for bed we did our usual news scan to see if anything was happening in the world. Seattlepi.com told us that Sir Edmund Hillary, first ascender of Mt. Everest, had recently passed away.

We first learned about Sir Edmund when we read Jon Krakauer's (self-exculpating) Into Thin Air, his personal account of tragedy atop Mt. Everest. This was followed by a quick reading of Dick Bass' (self-glorifying) Seven Summits. Everyone who attempts to climb a mountain anywhere knows about Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the sherpa who, with Hillary, ascended Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953. Unlike these books, Hillary didn't even admit that he was the first (of he and Norgay) to reach the summit of Everest. And even then, the confession was in a sort of by the by fashion. From his book, View from the Summit:
We drew closer together as Tenzing brought in the slack on the rope. I continued cutting a line of steps upwards. Next moment I had moved onto a flattish exposed area of snow with nothing but space in every direction.

Tenzing quickly joined me and we looked round in wonder. To our immense satisfaction we realized [we] had reached the top of the world.
Though we had long admired Hillary, reading his obituary, we learned even more of his principled approach to life. He was a conservationist, sought after lecturer, and philanthropic supporter of the Everest region and it's native Sherpas. He even called for "honest-to-God morality" during the political debates in New Zealand in the 1960s.

This summer, when we (what? remember with horror?) remember USA, summer 1968, we should also remember that there were principled people like Sir Edmund Hillary who spoke up for morality--even when it wasn't popular.

*Update 16 January, 12:52PM MST: For more on the horrors of 1968, read Thomas Sowell "Myths of '68."

Rosie O'Donnell & the Amoral Market

We read it in the aforementioned comments over at the Seattle PI about the fairness doctrine and we read it in a post our buddy made on cougarboard.com. We refer, of course, to the hokey notion that because media outlets are controlled by supposedly "conservative" business interests, that makes the media outlets they control ipso facto conservative.

Nevermind the fact that in the last several election cycles, most businesses donated almost equally to both the Republican and Democratic parties. Where they don't give equally, it is based on who they think has the best chance of winning, not ideology. They want to support whoever will eventually be sitting on the Ways and Means Committee--regardless of political party. Ignore also the fact that few businesses are controlled by some small cabal of middle aged white males who, along with trying to gain monopolistic control of their industry, work tirelessly towards their ultimate goal of playing puppetmaster with the US government. Come on. Aren't we too old for these crazy conspiracy theories?

Capitalism, markets, business--these things are neither Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. The market is neither moral nor immoral. It seeks only profit. This guiding principle applies equally to the media. If a corporate interest believes ratings will rise and with it their profits, they will keep Rosie O'Donnell on the air until the public tires of her. If Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert or Keith Olbermann makes them money, they will continue to fund production of their shows. The same thing applies (obviously) to conservative media. These businesses didn't pull their advertising from Air America because of politics, they stopped buying airtime because Air America didn't have enough listeners.

Wake up. If there are dollars to be made, and one company will ignore the opportunity because of some ideological difference, you can bet your bottom dollar that their competitor will step in and take advantage of the opening. They don't care if Democrats, Republicans, Communists or Atheists buy their widgets, they just want to make a profit. That's business. That's capitalism. That's the amoral market.

Pardon Libby

We've been reading the op-ed "soundoffs" section over at the Seattle P-I. It's part of our effort to avoid becoming as insular our liberal friends who continue to drink the kool-aid over at Daily Kos, The Nation, NYT op-ed, Washington Post op-ed.... uh, yeah, it might be a quicker exercise to list only the conservative outlets.

Predictably, they are all foaming at the mouth about the 30 month sentence given to Scooter Libby yesterday. Never mind that there was no original crime committed. Never mind that the prosecutor knew it wasn't Libby who leaked the information to the press, but rather Bush administration critic Richard Armitage. Never mind also that Libby's only crime was not being able to remember from whom he first heard about the leak. None of that matters. For the loony left, it's far more important that facts are bent to fit the conspiracy theories that soften their reality.

Kind of like the loony left's favorite accepted notion about Castro's Cuba--specifically, that health care down there is awesome(!!). Michael Moore produced his latest docu-drama based on that "fact." Forget for a moment that all the information we have about Cuba's health care comes from Castro's propaganda machine. He wouldn't lie about this stuff, would he?

But, like Miller, we don't want to get off on a rant here. The point is that the loony left substitutes "liberal talking points" for "facts." Kind of like the dustup between whacky Rosie and Elizabeth Hasselbeck on The View we watched on Youtube yesterday. Kind of like the ideological differences between the Democratic candidates in the debate the other day (sarcasm in print just doesn't work; there were no differences). All of this from the party that insists it is open minded and intellectually diverse. Has "pro-life Democrat" become an oxymoron yet?

So, for now, they get to rant about how Libby is the first of the administration "criminals" to face prison time. Hopefully, President Bush will soon pardon Libby, so then the loony left can add another layer of complexity to their favorite campfire conspiracy stories.
